VASER is a type of ultrasound-assisted liposuction that offers dramatic body contouring with less pain, swelling and downtime compared with traditional liposuction.
Used by leading liposuction surgeons across the word, VASER represents one-of-a-kind precision body sculpting and is an alternative to traditional, more invasive liposuction techniques. It is supported by numerous published clinical studies establishing safety and efficacy and is clinically proven to enhance skin retraction for smoother results than traditional liposuction.
VASER liposuction can treat numerous areas of the body at once – producing noticeable results in just one procedure without the discomfort and long recovery times of traditional liposuction treatments.
Developed by Solta Medical, a leader in medical aesthetics and the same name behind well-known brands including Thermage non-surgical skin tightening and Fraxel laser, VASER is advancing the capabilities of liposuction and influencing unrivalled body contouring results.
What is VASER liposuction?
VASER liposuction is an advanced form of liposuction that uses ultrasonic energy to break down and emulsify fat, making it easier to remove. Traditional liposuction involves manual manipulation and suction to remove fat.
VASER liposuction can offer increased precision, reduced blood loss and gentler fat removal compared with traditional liposuction methods, leading to a smoother, more precise result and potentially faster recovery time.
How does VASER work?
VASER utilises ultrasound energy to target and break down and liquefy specific areas of fatty deposits. This technology makes it easier for the surgeon to remove the unwanted fat using a suction device and allows for a more precise sculpting of the body.
VASER is unique in its ability to target fat cells while protecting other important surrounding tissues, such as blood vessels, nerves and collagen fibres from damage. It also optimises procedure speed and efficiency while minimising trauma to surrounding tissue, promoting faster treatment with reduced trauma, pain, swelling, bruising and blood loss. After the treatment, you can also expect less downtime and discomfort, as well as enhanced skin retraction compared to traditional liposuction.
What does a VASER liposuction procedure look like?
First, the area to be treated is filled with a tumescent fluid, comprised of local anaesthetic and saline solution. Next, a small ultrasound probe VASER ultrasound is used to break up and liquefy fat cells. A small, thin tube called a cannula is then used to gently suction out the dislodged fat.
VASER is powerful enough to eliminate large areas of fat, yet gentle enough to treat more delicate areas, such as the neck and arms.
VASER can sculpt and shape multiple areas in a single procedure, including:
- Jowls, chin and neck – VASER liposuction can address submental fat, which often leads to a double chin, helping to create a more defined jawline and neck profile.
- Abdomen – By removing excess abdominal fat, VASER liposuction can help reveal underlying muscle definition and create a flatter, more toned stomach area.
- Love handles, hips – Unwanted fat deposits around the waist can be challenging to eliminate through diet and exercise alone. For the right patient, VASER liposuction offers a good option for contouring the midsection.
Additional areas VASER can treat include:
- Breast tissue (in all genders)
- Arms
- Back, buttocks or thighs
- Knees, calves or ankles

FAQs
How long is recovery and downtime?
The recovery time for VASER liposuction can vary depending on factors such as the size of the treated area and the amount of fat removed. Patients typically experience swelling, bruising and minor discomfort in the days following the procedure. Compression garments are usually recommended for a few weeks after the surgery to help reduce swelling and support the healing process. Most patients can return to work and light activities within one to two weeks, but strenuous activities or exercise should be avoided for four to six weeks.
Compared with traditional liposuction, VASER liposuction offers an advantage of less pain and bruising, due to its precision and more gentle nature. This results in a shorter downtime, allowing patients to generally return to their normal activities more quickly.
When will I see results?
Noticeable results vary according to the amount of fat removed, the number of areas treated, and other factors. Many patients report that they see results immediately after the procedure, with the final results around three to four months later as all residual swelling resolves.
Are there any risks?
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. These may include infection, bleeding, bruising and nerve damage. It is essential to thoroughly discuss these potential risks with a qualified and appropriately trained doctor before undergoing the procedure. You should also seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner before deciding to have the procedure.
Is the fat removal permanent?
Yes, once fat cells are destroyed, they are gone forever. However, If you gain weight after liposuction, the fat cells in other areas of your body can still expand, which can result in new areas of fat accumulation. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help to prevent new fat cells from forming and maintain the results of your liposuction procedure.
Who is a good candidate for VASER?
Proper patient selection is crucial, as some individuals may not be suitable candidates due to certain health conditions or risk factors.
The ideal candidates for VASER liposuction are individuals who are in good health, maintaining a stable weight, and seeking to improve the appearance of specific body areas that are resistant to diet and exercise. They should also have realistic expectations of what liposuction can achieve for them and be willing to maintain a healthy lifestyle following the procedure. Although VASER liposuction is a powerful body contouring tool, it is not a weight-loss solution.
Everyone’s goals and circumstances are different, so for an individualised recommendation, we recommend consulting your VASER provider.
