Fat transfer is the latest trend in beauty and many believe it is the ideal solution for anyone seeking to enlarge their breasts, plump up their cheeks or eliminate wrinkles.

“Fat is considered the ideal filling agent because it is safe, provides a natural result and is very long-lasting, if not permanent,” says Dr Vivek Eranki, of Cosmetique Cosmetic Surgery Clinic.

Fat transfer involves removing fat from your body and transferring it to another area that needs volumising. The most common areas where fat is harvested from is the abdomen, love handles, upper back and the thighs.

“These are very stubborn fat pockets and in some patients, diet and exercise alone may not be enough to reach their ideal aesthetic goal. This fat can now be put to good use via fat transfer.

“The fat is gently removed, processed and then injected into the area needing treatment.”

Fat transfer is booming for a number of reasons. Firstly, it has a high rate of success. Up to 80% of the infected fat survives and remains in place permanently. Secondly, it does not require any ongoing maintenance, checks or renewal.  In the case of some older breast implants, these are known to require replacement every 10 years on average. Thirdly, fat transfer doesn’t involve placing anything foreign into the body. It is simply an adjustment of fat placement around the body.

“We have access to the latest technology and equipment which tighten the area of fat harvest and maximise the uptake of the grafted fat. Fat transfer procedures are painless and the patients are discharged home the same day,” Dr Eranki adds. “Recovery time is fast, and there is little discomfort or downtime.”

Where can fat be transferred?

Fat can be transferred to any area of volume loss. The most common areas of fat transfer include:

  • Face – cheeks, marionette lines and lips
  • Hands
  • Breasts

“We are seeing a surge in enquiries for fat transfer procedures. I think people have decided while they are in isolation that they want to do something for themselves once life starts to return to normal,” Dr Eranki said.

“Fat transfer deals with two issues at once. It helps the patient to remove unwanted fat in some areas and use some of it to address other areas of concern with a natural looking outcome.
